We are currently engaged in the global promotion
of the Hiroshima-Nagasaki Protocol, which should be adopted as an official document at the 2010 NPT Review Conference.
The year 2020 is important because we would like as many hibakusha as possible to witness the world without nuclear weapons. And without realizing a nuclear weapon free world, our minimum responsibility to future generations will not have been discharged.
Today the City of Hiroshima stands with President Obama, and as members of the overwhelming majority of people and nations around the world who seek the abolition of nuclear weapons, we call ourselves the »Obamajority«. Together, we can eliminate nuclear weapons by the year 2020.
The ban on anti-personnel landmines, the liberation from poverty through the Grameen Bank, and the efforts to stop global warming show us that it is we – each and every one of us alive on this Earth –
who have the power to change the world and shape the future of humanity. With this in mind,
I am profoundly grateful to everyone involved in making Genbaku No Hi 2009, which calls
for the abolition of nuclear weapons.
I sincerely hope that you, as a member of the Obamajority, will continue to work with us toward
the abolition of nuclear weapons and the realization of everlasting world peace.
In closing, I extend my best wishes for the success
of this production, and for the continued good health and success of everyone in the audience today.
Tadatoshi Akiba, »Mayor for Peace«
